As part of the Day of the Dead festivities, the Senate of the Republic inaugurated the exhibition “BICO TII, Offering to Our Ancestors”, featuring seven traditional altars from the state of Oaxaca. The cultural event was organized at the initiative of Senator Luisa Cortés, originally from Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz.

Representatives from Oaxaca’s diverse regions —including the Istmo, Papaloapan, Coast, Mixteca, Northern and Southern Sierras and the Central Valleys— participated in the event, showcasing the mystical and colorful ways in which Oaxacans honor this deeply meaningful celebration for Mexico.

The opening ceremony included remarks by Senator Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez, President of the Senate’s Board of Directors, who emphasized the importance of preserving Mexico’s ancestral traditions. She was joined by Senator Edith López, President of the Commission on Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples, and Senator Luisa Cortés, both of whom highlighted the cultural significance of this symbolic exhibition.

“With these traditions, our departed are more alive than ever,” said Senator Laura Itzel Castillo. “This exhibition honors the cosmogony of Indigenous peoples and reminds us that those who are remembered never truly die. Through our altars, we greet our ancestors and share with them the dishes they once enjoyed among us”.

The exhibition also featured a traditional market offering Oaxacan crafts, textiles, and regional foods, as well as live performances of traditional music. Attendees included cultural representatives and artisans from across Oaxaca’s regions, who brought to life the spirit of the Day of the Dead within the halls of the Mexican Senate.

“BICO TII, Offering to Our Ancestors”, stands as a tribute to the vibrant heritage of Oaxaca —a land where remembrance, art, and tradition intertwine to celebrate life through the memory of those who came before.
